Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election
New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his plan to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, even after an extended period of public tension between the pair of Democrats.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations
Just last month, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, stating he now plans to support Cuomo in areas where he maintains strong support.
“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the communities of color that have been affected by urban displacement on how important this election is,” Adams remarked.
He added, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has drawn interest globally and represented hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.
During a recent candidate forum, both Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa declared they would decline Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Months ago, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.
At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor responded to reporters asking about the endorsement plan by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a contentious mayoral debate.
