The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
