Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he will determine whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yeah, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor remarked when pressed about seriously considering a White House bid post the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."
Newsom's time in office as governor ends in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he emphasized that any choice is not imminent.
"It's up to destiny," he said.
Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary
Newsom has emerged as a notable critic of the current federal leadership, leveraging his digital presence and advocating for a proposition that would boost Democratic House seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has invited attacks from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor does not care about the state's residents in a weekend interview on a major news network. Duffy disclosed plans to cut government money from California and suggested eliminating the state's ability to issue commercial driver's licenses.
"I plan to withdraw $160m from the state," he stated, in the wake of a recent deadly accident in the state involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that led to loss of life and casualties.
The governor's team noted that the national authorities had renewed the driver's employment on several occasions, which allowed him to secure a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
The transportation secretary had before announced he was withholding additional funds from the state for not enforcing linguistic standards for CDL holders.
Firm Rebuttal from the Administration
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, fails to grasp federal law," the governor's team responded in a previous statement countering the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."
Polling Data and Political Future
A this month's poll found that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters said that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, public support for the governor has increased to an mean of about one-third from previous levels, while his disapproval has decreased from an mean of previous highs to current figures.
Some time ago, Newsom remarked while traveling several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.
He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.
"The thought that a guy who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, extraordinary," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the voters."
