The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 people perished and more than 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.
Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
