The English along with Welsh Placed Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group together, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they claimed a convincing win, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

If the groups conclude according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
