Israelis have come together around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership delayed formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams gathered in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the terms of the agreement.

A senior Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations indicated that an night meeting of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.

The official said the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the agreement.

He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have still not produce any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are working hard to reduce the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Matters in Negotiations

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance provision
  • Post-war administration of the territory

Public Reaction

In the city's memorial area previously, young a woman - whose sibling survived the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and many more were captured by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until every captive return none of us will feel safe."

"Once we see everyone home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.

Outside the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Activist one woman stated: "We must do any agreement needed for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be secure."

Research now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of Israelis want the conflict to conclude in exchange for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the area of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.

From there, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr areas and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"When the evening comes, the fear arrives with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.

"My family are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."

Health Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had accepted the bodies of several people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area said another two dead people had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli forces while attempting to get assistance to the south region, medics reported.
